Window Coverings and Window Treatments – A Quick Guide

Window coverings are the most common types of window coverings available today. They are made from a wide variety of fabrics and can be found in many different colors and patterns. Window coverings have been around for thousands of years and were once an essential part of every home. Not only do they keep the cold out and provide ventilation but they also add visual appeal to any home and can add value to your home if properly installed. Read more.

Window coverings come in two basic types: corded and cordless. Corded window blinds consist of the main curtain rod that runs across the top of the window. The curtain cord is then attached to the rod using a cord or chain. Because the curtain cord is usually quite long, you will need to make sure it hangs straight or the blinds will sag and pull the room’s interior out of focus.

Cordless window coverings consist of the entire blind unit pulled up into one compact unit with a single control switch. This unit is then clipped onto the window frame with the use of a small cable. Because there are no cords to unsnap and tangle, cordless window blinds include the advantage of a very quiet operation. Some people argue that you cannot hear the cord to turn on in some cases, but I find this to be not true. As long as the light bulb is not installed in a location where it will create interference with the cord, a cordless unit will produce very little noise.

The third type of window coverings, we will discuss today are the shoji blinds. These window coverings consist of very small panels that are made of a very tough material. When these panels are open, light from the sun shining through them will bounce back into the room. This bouncing effect creates a shadow effect on the floor below. This effect is very pleasing to the eye, and the result is a very pleasing decorating design.

These three types of window coverings are not the only options available for windows; they are certainly the most common. In my next article, we will look at how to choose whether you want solar heat gain or solar light filtration. We will also examine how to choose whether you would like the window coverings to have dimmer lights, or flip-up blackout shades. In addition to looking at the options for window coverings, it is important to consider your layout and color scheme when choosing custom window treatments. This will help you achieve the decorating look that you want, without having to compromise your budget.

As we have covered window treatments, lets not forget about window frames. When shopping for window coverings, you should make sure that they fit securely in place and are smooth to operate. When you are shopping for window frame material, it is important to choose the materials that are durable and will last for years to come. Some of the more popular materials include wood, aluminum, vinyl, and fiberglass. In Part II of this article, we will take a look at some of the various styles of window coverings and discuss how to choose whether you would like to go with a modern style, or one that has been around for many years.
